Mayor James Ledford of Palmdale, Calif., and Steven Schmidt, director of the Dryden Aircraft Operations Facility, lead a group of Palmdale civic officials down the stairs after a tour of the SOFIA airborne observatory. The highly modified Boeing 747SP housing a German-built infrared telescope was a highlight of their Feb. 19 tour of the Dryden Aircraft Operations Facility in Palmdale.
