SOFIA in the News
The Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy, SOFIA, used its 17-ton, 100-inch infrared telescope to image Jupiter during the overnight hours of May 25/26, 2010. This was the first time the airborne observatory’s telescope was used to image a celestial object at altitude, and the event is known as “First Light.” The First Light images were subsequently seen by thousands when shown on the Reuters Board in New York’s Times Square. SOFIA is a joint project between NASA and the German Aerospace Agency. (PR Newswire photo)
