Cycle 3

October 16, 2014 update: the Cycle 3 peer review process for both US and German queues have been completed. Logistical and cost details for the intended Southern Hemisphere deployment are still being worked out, so we now expect to make the announcement of the Cycle 3 results before the end of October, 2014.

The SOFIA Cycle 3 closed on July 18, 2014. A total of 153 proposals were received - 122 from 14 different countries through the USRA-led NASA queue and 31 from German Institutions through the DSI-led queue. The request for each of the instruments offered was substantial, and all areas of SOFIA related astronomy were covered by the proposals.

The proposals are currently undergoing technical review and feasibility analysis at the SOFIA Science Center in support of the independent peer reviews scheduled for the end of August, 2014 for the US queue and for mid-September for the German queue. The results of the proposal selection are expected to be announced in early October, after the recommendations of the US and German peer review panels have been merged and approved by the SOFIA Science Mission Operations Director. Immediately following the announcement, successful proposers will be requested to prepare and submit Phase II proposals, containing the detailed observation plans.

The SOFIA Cycle 3 observations will start in March 2015.
