Integrating a 3 meter telescope into an aircraft is a major engineering feat - something that has never been done before. The purpose for a design mock-up of the aircraft's telescope cavity area is to help L-3 Communications Integrated Systems engineers visualize detailed design layouts, annotate problem areas and evaluate design and engineering decisions prior to the actual modification work. The knowledge gained from the design mock-up will help engineers avoid unforeseen problems and ensure a successful modification.

The mock-up will include the forward and aft bulkhead, a cutout for the telescope cavity area, and a special door design and aperture to accomodate the telescope and a telescope simulator.
