When modifications are completed, SOFIA will not look at all like other 747 aircrafts - inside or outside. The aircraft will have a complete make-over.

The forward part of the aircraft will include an area for education and public outreach, allowing educators to participate in research flights.

The mid section of the aircraft will accomodate the Mission Controls and Communications System (MCCS) – the nerve center for the entire observatory. This is the work area for scientists and technicians.

The aft (rear) portion of the aircraft will house the telescope and the systems control. This will be the most heavily modified area, with nearly every piece of primary structure, including aircraft skins, modified or replaced.

description below

Upon arrival at Waco, Texas, the SOFIA aircraft is taken on a test flight. This is an image of SOFIA prior to modification. The black square painted on the side of the plane represent the locaton of the telescope cavity.
