DLR (German Aerospace Center)
The DLR is the German space agency
cooperating with NASA in the SOFIA project. DLR is
responsible for supplying the telescope assembly
to NASA. DLR will also contribute one fifth of the
total effort required for the operational support.
The cooperation between the US and German space agencies
continues a long tradition of joint US and German
space research ventures.
German activities for SOFIA are carried
out in two DLR locations, Bonn and Berlin. The entire
project is managed from DLR in Bonn. The project
office in Berlin handles scientific and technical
support to contractors during the design and development
of the telescope. It also supports German science
groups developing instruments for SOFIA, and organizes
the German education and public outreach program.
