NASA SOFIA Project Office (SPO)
The NASA SOFIA Project Office (SPO)
is the government organization responsible for management
oversight, fiscal control and technical monitoring
of the US portion of the SOFIA program. The SPO also
performs liaison and coordination with the German
Aerospace Center, DLR, which is responsible for the
SOFIA Telescope Assembly. The NASA SPO oversees the
SOFIA Prime Contract; reports progress and status
to NASA Ames and NASA Headquarters management; coordinates
with DLR on program interfaces, schedule milestones,
and risk mitigation; maintains control over system
requirements; reviews and validates US and German
designs; oversees the Observatory-level integration
planning and implementation; participates as observer
on US and German design teams; approves US system
designs and interfaces, and recommends approval to
DLR for German designs; reviews and approves verification
plans and accepts delivery of US system, and recommends
acceptance to DLR; and approves SOFIA operations,
logistics and support plans.
