Our modern understanding of galaxy evolution relies heavily on the exchange of matter between galaxies and the intergalactic medium (IGM) to explain a broad range of observable galaxy properties. The competition between mass gain (via accretion) and loss (via outflows) plays out in the circumgalactic medium (CGM), the interface between the IGM and galaxies. I will review how UV absorption-line surveys have transformed our understanding of the CGM focusing in particular on several surveys I’ve recently led (KODIAQ, Project AMIGA, COS CGM Compendium). I will finally offer some thoughts on future UV space-based and deep HI surveys of the CGM of galaxies.
