Detection of water on the sunlit surface of the Moon was one of the key results of the SOFIA mission. In this talk I will explain the lunar water cycle, highlighting the key processes and significant unknowns. I will show results from observations this year that include measuring detailed spatial variation of the water signal (the 6 micron line, observed with FORCAST) associated with features on the lunar surface. And I will make the case for urgency of addressing the nature of lunar volatiles before anthropogenic become too abundant.
